9 Healthy Habits To Practice This Year

We are already a couple months into the new year, but it’s never too late to start integrating some new habits and mindful intentions into your life.

1. Before you check your phone in the morning, (ok, after you turn your alarm off), sit and think about what you are grateful for. You woke up with a roof over your head, with running water, a loving, supportive partner/family, and with food in your fridge. You are more wealthy than 75% of this world.

2. Practice meditation/yoga before you go about your day. Whether you practice in your bed, outside, or on your mat, setting aside time for yourself will benefit you in the present moment and throughout the rest of your day. There are many free, instructional videos that you can search throughout the Internet to assist you with your practice.

3. Drink a big glass of water before you eat/drink anything else. Our bodies are usually pretty dehydrated after a night of sleep. Even if you wake up with a rumbling tummy, chances are your body is fiending for some agua.

4. Take deep breaths. Constantly. Not just when you’re frustrated, either. Make it a positive experience. Draw a deep inhale of all of the magical energy around you, filter it throughout your body, and exhale, allowing it to exit just as smoothly as it came in the beginning.

5. Take time to listen. To yourself, your coworkers, friends, family, strangers. So many of us just want to be heard, even when we may be reaching out in search of advice, sometimes a calming, supportive presence is all that was wanted in the get-go.

6. Prepare and eat your meals at home. Believe me, I know it’s easier said than done. But having one more thing already planned out for your day will help in the long run. Especially when you have a short lunch break and not many options near your office (and healthy ones at that)! Prepping meals at home reinsures that your food was consciously prepared, cultivated with the best ingredients, and you got the best bang for your buck! $:)$

7. Spend more time in nature. I don’t mean that you have to go to your local national park and hike for 3 hours, (that’s wonderful if you can), but simply just step outside of your home/apartment, look around at the trees and plants around you and take a deep breath. Walk in the grass, ground yourself, reset your roots and intentions. If the stress of the day is getting to you, know that you can always come here to relax. Physically and spiritually.

8. Connect with others, new and old faces. Sharing a smile, laugh, or observation about anything could be exactly what someone else needed. Heck, you probably needed it. There are only positive reinforcements from this kind of behavior, once the ball starts rolling it’s pretty hard to stop its momentum. It acts like a domino effect as well, your positive, genuine attitude is contagious and will be passed on between strangers for as long as we don’t know.

9. Schedule down time for yourself. As easy as it is to schedule appointments, lunches, and errands, we should also be putting aside time for ourselves. Whether you give yourself an extra 20 minutes when you’re getting ready in the morning, to catching the sunset after work, to treating yourself to anything that makes you feel your best. You deserve it!
